Last offerings for June .

Viv had made excellent progress with her Thistle piece .She wondered if there was too much space at the top of the piece and whether it needed something extra. There were mixed  opinions ,some thought it was okay as is ,others suggested the addition of a butterfly .A look online found species attracted to thistles ,
Viv will make up her own mind and we shall see what she decides.

She brought the above piece for Couch ,admitting it was done a while ago but still relevant.

Jenn hadn’t achieved as much this month She had a go at natural dyeing ,choosing nettles as they were plentiful .She used a variety of fabrics but silk ,on the far right was the most successful. Her Couch is below ,some threads on a faint card print .

She had also made this doll .She had an idea to create some based on Bristol Delft figurines .

This doll proved a challenge because of the small size but the idea may still be explored.

She had found something online at www.spitalfieldslife.com for inspiration .It was illustrations by Marcellus Laroon called ‘Cries of London.’ , lots of engravings of street hawkers and traders .

Keep watching to see if it progresses …….or not!

This and that .

Sally’s take on Couch is a hand painted piece of fabric with toning threads .She is also trying to get more work ideas going from her concertina book of the kitchen.

In this instance taking inspiration from the bottles and jars of herbs and condiments.

Carol had been away so hurriedly put together this below as her Couch .

She had taken the class that Margaret Maple taught for Bristol Stitchers . They made this bag from Yoko Saito’ Patchwotk Treasures book ,under Margaret’s very experienced guidance. It is soo well put together being lined and quilted with bias finished seams.Such a useful bag ….this is destined for Carol’s granddaughter.

She had been to the Scilly  Isles and brought back some goodies.Emma Humphries Fimo ,buttons

and this very good idea .A refillable sketchbook .The loose ring binders mean pages can be swopped about and other ones added in .A great idea to copy.

Riches.

Fumi had sought out a suitable colour cloth to create her hanging ,instead of hiding the ‘pages’ away inside a book .

She continues to amaze us with her ingenuity in finding things on a small scale to turn into tiny works of art. This time it was knitting on twigs and an ice cream spoon !

She had followed a couple of workshops on ‘Making Zen ‘ which were published for 24 hours. It

Included the butterfly ,this boat coaster

and these tiny specimens.

This is a clever two sided purse

Fastened with poppers to create two pockets.

She has also branched out into three dimensional stitching from her last month’s offerings.

She brought along her treasure boxes filled with all kinds of loveliness.

We discussed ideas as how Fumi might display them to best effect ,as they deserve close inspection and showing off .

Her interpretation of Couch.

And unsurprisingly tiny weaving but on the leftovers of a delicious meal !

‘COUCH ‘

No stopping Kirsten !

Such a lot to look at ,Kirsten’s ideas just keep coming. She has added to her paper clay items for her work box employing drawing and modelling skills . In the embroidery ring are some of her drawings printed on silk organza by Prinfab.

She has found yet another couple of  perfect boxes to display her drawings of all things sewing related.

She has mounted her original box with some of her creations

and has spares still to use .

Not finished she has used a tetrapak to create some prints…..

She had also been reading some books related to women and embroidery.Amongst them this one

which set Kirsten thinking ,some workbook deliberations ,a bit of rooting around and unearthing produced several items she owns.

that might have been kept in her personal pocket.

and she’s off down another route!

In case interested these were the other books .

Lots of interesting things.

Debby had had a busy month but it hadn’t stopped her sharing some interesting things.First was this lovely stitched piece, above , of a container of flowers beautifully matched to the background fabrics.
She had picked up this circular mount very cheaply and used it to frame her dandelion clock ,from our first monthly prompt .

And a framed piece featuring her trademark bird with keys

And some lettering inviting the viewer to choose  their dream .These will probably put in an appearance in our Prior shop exhibition in September this year .

She had been teaching at Stoke Lodge where she and her students had used Cyanotype fabric sheets to create some images .Debby had great success with the plastic doily you see above .

She also tried with an image  printed on inkjet transparency film .It was less successful but there all the same .The sheets she used are those from www.jacquardproducts.com .The  technique was developed by  Anna Atkins and Herschel in the early days of photography.

She wondered about using pressed flowers like these beautiful seaweed cards she had purchased .They are from Molesworth Bird in Dorset.www.molesworth bird.co.uk

She had sent her piece created in a workshop with Sue Brown at www.theYard.co.uk to www.prinfab.co.uk .The resulting piece of fabric will be used to create something unique to Debby. We will have to wait and see what.

And finally her response to Couch .
