‘COUCH ‘

 

No stopping Kirsten !

Such a lot to look at ,Kirsten’s ideas just keep coming.She has added to her paper clay items for her work box employing drawing and modelling skills . In the embroidery ring are some of her drawings printed on silk organza by Prinfab.

She has found yet another couple of  perfect boxes to display her drawings of all things sewing related.

She has mounted her original box with some of her creations 

and has spares still to use .

Not finished she has used a tetrapak to create some prints…..

She had also been reading some books related to women and embroidery.Amongst them this one 

which set Kirsten thinking ,some workbook deliberations ,a bit of rooting around and unearthing produced several items she owns.

that might have been kept in her personal pocket.

Lots of interesting things.

Debby had had a busy month but it hadn’t stopped her sharing some interesting things.First was this lovely stitched piece,above , of a container of flowers beautifully matched to the background fabrics.

She had picked up this circular mount very cheaply and used it to frame her dandelion clock ,from our first monthly prompt .

And a framed piece featuring her trademark bird with keys 

       And some lettering inviting the viewer to choose  their dream .These will probably put in an appearance in our Prior shop exhibition in September this year .

She had been teaching at Stoke Lodge where she and her students had used Cyanotype fabric sheets to create some images .Debby had great success with the plastic doily you see above .

She also tried with an image  printed on inkjet transparency film .It was less successful but there all the same .The sheets she used are those from www.jacquardproducts.com .The  technique was developed by  Anna Atkins and Herschel in the early days of photography.

She wondered about using pressed flowers like these beautiful seaweed cards she had purchased .They are from Molesworth Bird in Dorset.www.molesworth bird.co.uk

She had sent her piece created in a workshop with Sue Brown at www.theYard.co.uk to www.prinfab.co.uk .The resulting piece of fabric will be used to create something unique to Debby.We will have to wait and see what.

And finally her response to Couch .

 

June

Sue had made a start on her Concorde instrument panel .Stitching onto khadi paper with a backing to reinforce.In the above image you can see where it has been cut away.We liked the empty dials and suggested it could be left like that .She intended to add in the numbers but we will see what she decides.

She has been continuing with her watercolour class and is producing some lovely examples .

Kirsten could see a horizon and a landscape ,which way up do  you like ?

For last month’s prompt ‘COUCH’ she brought two samples .This richly coloured one has such a lot of work with beautiful stitched circles overlaid with a variety of couched threads .Sue said she might reuse and recycle into cards by cutting it up !

The base of this is Sue’s handmade paper with inclusions and embedded couched threads of different kinds.This could be framed as a piece in its own right.

 

 

Sources of inspiration.

Jenn has taken Bristol Delftware as inspiration for ‘Found’ She looked at the collection in Bristol museum.

and has used Inktense to paint fragments on cotton organdie .

She backed it with wadding and pelmet vilene before adding machine stitch.

She is exploring other ideas to maybe create a series of three dimensional figures based on a figurine she saw online .

She has used this to make some drawings of traders using ‘Marcellus Laroon’s Cries of London’ Some sampling will need to be done to work out how they might be constructed.

   She had also taken some online courses ,the first Helen Wells Still Life Lab which she is still working through .The drawings below gave her a real sense of freedom and enjoyment.www.helenwellsartist .com

They will be developed and perhaps taken into other media.

The second was a free course of Helen Bulmer where a restricted colour palette was chosen and marks were explored and added to on a large sheet. A viewfinder was used to choose ares before being cut up and used to create a book .Jenn hasn’t followed this up ,preferring to group some together instead.

Going round in circles .

Carol hadn’t brought them along ,but she is continuing with the birds from her garden .

She had taken the idea of a circle and created a variety of small pieces using whole and parts of a circle in greens. She had also taken some buttons and used them as covers for tiny concertina books.

Bristol Stitchers had Paula Simpson whose book is ‘Art Of Kantha ‘  give a talk and run a workshop on

The end result would be a book showing a variety of ways of using this iconic technique.

Carol had as usual been involved behind the scenes helping her daughter with a project ‘ Broad  Meadow ‘
