Square for Plantlife

I thought people may like to know more about why I created the dandelion square.  This is what Plantlife say:

"Plantlife is launching an exciting new project to create a Bayeux Tapestry for Britain’s wild plants. We urge anyone with an interest in wild plants, or textile arts, or history to take part and share their creativity and stories.

Anyone can contribute a 15cm fabric square depicting any plant that currently grows wild in the UK. You can use any design and any fabric technique including sewing, weaving, knitting, felting, printing, paintings and pens. These squares will be displayed in an online gallery along with their stories and any video or audio files you wish to add. The squares will be sewn into sections of quilt and exhibited at the Wild North Festival in Northern Scotland in June 2013, and other suitable venues across Britain in 2013."

They have just extended the deadline to the middle of May (previously it was the end of March), so it gives those who think they would like to contribute, a bit more time. Anyone can contribute a 15 cm (6") square depicting any plant that grows wild in the UK. There are various themes you can work to, eg. historical, medicinal etc.  You can find all the details and the entry form  on their website - see "News" at www.wildaboutplants.org.uk or tel.0122 342730.

On the entry form it stated "Group or Company" so of course I put Gordano Textile Artists!

March meeting.

It was more like the depths of Winter than Spring dawning, with a bitter wind and snow flurries. However,we were cheered by the success of our exhibition at Nature in Art and the positive  feedback we received.
The meeting began as usual with" Show and Tell ",and there was plenty to show.Ira shared her technique for shrinking foils, and showed more pieces in progress.
We were delighted to see Heather's sketchbook for her City and Guild course she is taking with Viv White and Distant Stitch. She has done some stunning work, and she can draw beautifully, despite her protests otherwise !
Viv showed us a charming piece based on Dandelions for a competition.

Carol brought along a piece based on Mahoghany, looked at under much magnification
It is a subject that should sustain her for some time.

There were lots of other contributions before we moved on to discuss further business.Uppermost was the forthcoming North Somerset Arts Week which takes place from Thursday May 9th -Sunday May 12th where we will once again have a presence. We also gave some time to think about the exhibition later in the year at Bristol Guild and ,further into the future ,of when and where we might exhibit in 2014.A textile artist's life is never dull !
