More from our May meeting

NEWARK UPDATE.

Regrettably, our exhibition at Newark Park is not taking place.
The house is still drying out and it is not possible to estimate what repairs are needed and how long they will take.It is disappointing but completely out of our control. We expect to be given an alternative date somewhere in the future when the house is restored to normal.Meanwhile we look forward to The South West Quilt and Textile show 30th August -1st September 2018.

To continue last posting:

Carol's children had each recently moved into new homes. Carol photographed the houses and made fabric and stitch copies of them for her diary.

Jane showed a beautiful portfolio of the work she did in City and Guilds on historic lace. Recently she had used her amazing computer skills to produce these printed samples, by isolating a single motif from the lace and trying out different colourways.

Debby had produced some small pictures  for teaching purposes, using water soluble techniques.

She had found an interesting frame for a small picture; there were mixed views about it in the group!

Sally brought along her catalogue from the Grayson Perry exhibition at the Museum.  She felt that reading it contributed greatly to her appreciation and understanding of the exhibition.

Viv had been putting together some kits based on Miao embroidery; they will be on sale at the exhibition of Miao textiles which she and Sally Sparks are mounting at the West Country Quilt and Textile Show 31st August - 2nd September this year.

NEWARK UPDATE.

We have now been told that our exhibition at Newark Park will not take place.in May -June.

Kirsten is moving from felted birds and mice towards delightful hares like this little fellow!

She has been going to further art classes, and drew a section of her photo of reeds, water and reflections, using watercolour and pastel on extra fine wet and dry sandpaper with stunning results.

Ira brought along a piece she had found in a drawer, made some time ago, but showing her customary attention to fine detail.

Inspired by the gift of a very beautiful ceramic pot by a family member, she has started work on a piece layering the colours of the pot in sheers, and burning areas of it.

In addition, she has been studying and drawing Elizabethan chimneys with a view to a new project; we look forward to seeing what emerges!

Deryll had finished her landscape pieces intended for Newark Park, but we shall have to wait a while now to see these hung.

Sue had been playing with small circles to obtain ideas for colour combinations; they are shown laid on a section of her husband's tweed jacket which she had washed.

This beautiful pillow was made from a photograph taken on an evening walk with her daughter.

Sue had also been experimenting with her fabrics to create this piece.

Carol and Liz had attended an Embroiderers' Guild workshop with Zoe Hillyard on Boro and had produced these interesting pieces. This one is Carol's, on a denim jeans leg

This one is Liz's, on a strip of African woven cloth

Bling !

Debby had attended a workshop with The Quilters Guild run by Angie Hughes. This piece ,above uses some of the foils and stitch
A starter piece to familiarise herself with the technique before she really got going.

Angie often uses Hundertwasser and Klimt in her own work as inspiration. It was  Klimt that was the focus for this workshop on foiling.Debby used the above piece to inspire her and you can clearly see the link in the piece below.

They worked on black cotton velvet ,which Debby said gave a surprisingly good base to stitch into. They used bondaweb and foiled sweet papers to add the Bling, along with metallic threads,

as well as glue dots,Kim Thittichai used to supply these.Masks were used to protect some areas while the foiling was applied, using a small travel iron.

Debby went on to create another piece ,inspired by this encyclopaedia page reference for a spotted jewel fish, isn't he just fabulous. This technique has lots of mileage and we're sure we'll see more in this vein from Debby.

In other work she had continued with her mermaid adding in borders of two blues and lots of stitch.
